Der Fund des Yinlong besteht aus einem außergewöhnlich gut erhaltenen Skelett inklusive Schädel, bei dem nur die Schwanzspitze fehlt. Dieser kleine Dinosaurier zeigt eine Mischung aus Eigenschaften verschiedener Taxa wie Ceratopsiern, Pachycephalosauriern und auch Heterodontosauriern. Gefunden wurde das fast vollständige Fossil eines subadulten Tieres, in dessen Bauchhöhle sich sieben Gastrolithen (Magensteine) befanden, in den Gesteinsschichten der chinesischen Shishugou Formation, die aus dem späten Jura vor etwa 160 Millionen Jahren stammen.
