Regnosaurus wurde von Gideon Mantell ursprünglich als juveniler Iguanodon beschrieben, erst 1993 wurde er als ein vermutlich primitiver Stegosaurier beschrieben. Die Klassifizierung ist zweifelhaft, da von diesem Dinosaurier nur Teile des Beckens, einige Reste der Knochenplatten und Fragmente des Unterkiefers bekannt sind.
