Saurischia Sauropodomorpha Plateosauria

Die Plateosauria ("breite Echsen") waren eine Gruppe von frühen pflanzenfressenden Dinosauriern, die zu den Sauropodomorpha gehörten. Die Gruppe bestand aus mittelgroßen zweibeinigen Pflanzenfressern mit langen Hälsen. Diese Dinosaurier lebten in Asien, Europa und Südamerika während der späten Trias. Obwohl mehrere Dinosaurier über die Jahre als Plateosaurier eingestuft worden sind, besagt eine Studie von M. Adam Yates aus dem Jahr 2007, dass nur Plateosaurus und Unaysaurus gültige Plateosaurier-Arten sind. Im Jahr 2011 wurde mit Jaklapallisaurus aus Indien ein weiterer Plateosaurier beschrieben.

Die Familie der Plateosauria wurde 1895 von Professor Othniel Charles Marsh benannt, um Plateosaurus einer Gruppe zuordnen zu können. Die erste genaue Definition als Klade erfolgte im Jahr 1998 von Paul Sereno. Demnach besteht die Gruppe aus allen Plateosauria, die enger mit Plateosaurus als mit Massospondylus verwandt sind. Im Jahr 2004 beschrieben Peter Galton und Paul Upchurch eine alternative Definition: alle Taxa, die stärker mit Plateosaurus als mit Yunnanosaurus oder Massospondylus verwandt sind. Im Jahr 2005 änderte Sereno seine Definition noch einmal: Als Gruppe, bestehend aus Plateosaurus engelhardti (Meyer, 1837) und alle Arten, die enger mit Plateosaurus als mit Massospondylus carinatus (Owen, 1854) oder Saltasaurus loricatus (Bonaparte & Powell, 1980) in Zusammenhang stehen.
