Nach Bistahieversor aus New Mexico wurde mit Teratophoneus der zweite Tyrannosaurier aus dem südwestlichen Mittelamerika bekannt. Entdeckt wurde das Fossil, ein teilweise erhaltener Schädel und verschiedene Skelettteile, von Thomas Carr (der auch den Bistahieversor beschrieb) im Jahr 2011. Er unterscheidet sich von seinen nächsten Verwandten - Daspletosaurus und Tyrannosaurus - durch seinen kurzen, tiefen Schädel mit weniger Zähnen. Teratophoneus stellte einen basalen Vertreter der Tyrannosaurier auf dem nordamerikanischen Kontinent dar.
