Aves Pygostylia Ornithothoraces Euornithes

Die Euornithes ("wahre Vögel") waren eine Gruppe früher Vögel, die während der mittleren Kreidezeit vor rund 120 Millionen Jahren lebten. Die Namen Euornithes wurde für eine große Zahl von Vogelgruppen eingesetzt, da sie bereits im Jahr 1889 von Edward Drinker Cope benannt wurde. Die Gruppe der Euornithes wurde im Jahr 1998 von Paul Sereno weiter definiert als die Gruppe aller Vögel, die mehr mit den lebenden Vögeln (Aves) als mit den Enantiornithes ("Gegenvögel", vor allem mit Cathayornis) verwandt waren. Die Euornithes entwickelten die ersten Vogelschnäbel, die Schwanzfedern hatten eine fächerförmige Struktur und waren an einem Pygostyl befestigt. Eine weitere Verbesserung betraf die Flügel-Anatomie. Sie ermöglichte den flügelschlagenden Start und die Landung vom Boden oder von den Bäumen in die Luft. So war das Klettern auf Bäume nicht mehr erforderlich.

Die Gruppe der Euornithes umfasst einen fast identischen Inhalt wie eine andere, weit verbreitete Definition, die so genannten Ornithuromorpha. Diese wurden im Jahr 1999 von Luis Chiappe benannt. Sie wird umschrieben als die gemeinsamen Vorfahren von Patagopteryx, Vorona und den Ornithurae sowie alle deren Nachkommen.
